The Avenue of the giant is a 31 mile stretch of old highway 101 running through Humboldt Redwoods State Park.  At over 50,000 acres, HRSP is home to the largest remaining stand of old growth redwoods in the world.

The winding roads of Highway 36 take sightseers from Alton just south of Fortuna CA, to Susanville, snaking along the Van Duzer River on its way through the mountains.   This vista just past Alton reveals a spectacular view of the Van Duzer river valley below.

Exposed to years of abuse under the ownership of Union Pacific Railroad, the site has been classified as an urban brownfield by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Built in 1964 by Georgia Pacific, the Samoa Pulp Mill is the only total chlorine free pulp mill in the U.S.   The mill was converted to chlorine free (TCF) with blended processing by Louisiana Pacific over a decade ago and is now used for shipments to its paperboard mills in Asia.
